The Moore Story Line
Lieutenant James Moore was born in Londonerry, New Hampshire in 1747. He died in New Brighton, Pa., on January 21,1833. He gained his military title as a soldier in the American Revolution, fighting with the troops of Charlotte Co., New York, in the company of Captain Barnes, under the regiment of Colonel Jacobus Swarthmont. He fought in the battles of Brandywine, Stillwater, and Saratoga. As a private he was dispatched several times by his regiment commander as a spy upon the British troops. As a reward for his services, Moore was made a first lieutenant. Lt. Moore and his son Samuel also served in the war of 1812.
Lt. Moore married Isabelle Stewart at Salem, New York, in 1783. Isabelle Stewart, a relative of Mary Queen of Scots, was born in 1764 and died in New Brighton in 1853. She was interred in Grove Cemetery, New Brighton.
Lt. Moore and his wife came to Pennsylvania on the first train to run between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. They lived at the mouth of Chartiers Creek at a time when the Juniata Valley was still a wilderness.
In 1786 Lt. Moore came up the western side of the Beaver River looking for a place to make a habitation. Danger from Indians had to be considered, so he built a log cabin opposite the mouth of Brady's Run and near enough to the blockhouse at New Brighton to flee from danger if they were ever threatened. In 1803 he received the deed and record of survey for over 600 acres of land extending from the Beaver River to Rochester Hill Road, which were a grant for his services in the war.
